The transformation to the virtual cloud enterprise, steps (i)

The enterprise today, by increasingly outsourcing its IT and the various functions of the Value Chain to external partner firms, evolves towards a virtual/networked enterprise that houses its IT in the Cloud. Hence the virtual cloud enterprise name.

At the same time, the Digital technology make leaps that if not considered, render the technology in the enterprise obsolete in no time.

Therefore the evolution towards the digital virtual cloud enterprise is unavoidable. It looks like a “do it or die”.

Yet, to prepare the enterprise for the transition on this path one has to re-organise the enterprise on services that allow separation of concerns to break and manage complexity, and permit the outsourcing of non-core functions and IT to a cloud of service providers so that the enterprise can focus on its core business without having to cope with the awesome digital progress.

The first few steps involved heavily the EA team in modelling the current and target enterprise and assessing gaps that had to be filled in by the transformation.

Now, here are a few key Principles and Best Practices that guide the transformation to the virtual cloud enterprise:

– 1.   employ iterations with Go/No-Go milestones so that the programme can change course or roll back in case of materialised risks

– 2.   factor in current business priorities and strategy beside the service architecture transformation

– 3.   take advantage of existing enterprise technology, skills

– 4.   align planning to end of life cycle of existing platforms and the depreciation of the existing equipment

–  5.  consider existing business and departments programmes and outcomes

–  6.  aim to deliver early benefits to stakeholders in each iteration

–  7. have always in mind the whole enterprise, all its functions and technology, rather than siloes, so that you can take advantage of full suite offers and profit from their off-the-shelf integration and information alignment

–  8. plan ahead so that the Digital technology and market conditions do  not outpace your transformation

–  9. employ staging platforms before commuting to live operation

– 10. prepare and manage change so that it is known and accepted as much as possible

– 11. be prepared to roll back changes; deploy change as atomic transactions

– 12. perform work in parallel since the service concept enables it
