The implications of the Universal Journal (IT Toolbox Blogs)

The inaugural SAP-Centric Financials event, run in Dallas recently by Eventful conferences brought light to a couple of important aspects of implementing not only S/4HANA but in particular focused on the opportunities that Central Finance present to the SAP community.

What was particularly of interest to me was the fact that you can implement S/4HANA central finance and still hang on to your legacy SAP and other systems. If you feel that your really need them.

Of course in the perfect world, you move everything to a new S/4HANA system and eventually retire all those other systems but SAP recognises that that may be impractical or an unrealistic thing to expect.

Theer can be little doubt that moving to a continuous accounting based system like S/4HANA has advantages over the legacy approach, particularly with roll-up reporting with drill down capability. This ability really does sing to the hearts and minds of those focused on Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) but not if they feel that they will lose something in the data along the way.

Aside from the keynotes, which were interesting, two particular sessions stood out in my mind as important information sessions. The first of these was the session by Carsten Hilker a SAP Solution Manager for Central Finance and the North American lead for the International Controller Association.

In Carsten’s session he described the landscape, the architecture and the way companies can consider the implementation of Central Finance for S/4HANA while retaining their old systems. For legacy ECC systems, the news is relatively good but the cost and complexity of implementing SLT was somewhat downplayed.

Carsten also spent a good deal of time talking about the importance of the new Universal Journal in S/4HANA and ACDOCA and how this fundamentally advances the quality of the SAP ERP system for the purposes of reporting and analysis.

He explains this very nicely in an interview hosted on the SAPINsider website.
