A trip down memory lane. (IT Toolbox Blogs)

I can remember the first time I tried Linux. The reason I wanted to try Linux was that I had heard about it and I wanted to find an alternative to the relatively new Windows XP which I did not want to use.

By relatively new I meant that Windows XP had been out for a while, at least a year or two yet I was still hanging on to the best Windows operating system ever and that was Windows 98, special edition.

The reason why I did not want to use Windows XP was because it was the first operating system to start reporting back to Microsoft and I did not agree with that so I did not use that operating system.

So I was on the lookout for an alternative and that was when I heard about Linux. I figured I would give it a try and started down the road which lead to me being here where I am today.

The very first distribution I installed was RedHat Linux. It was difficult to install and seemed very strange to what I was used to. I had a peek here and a poke there however, I really had no idea what I was doing.

I was really not that impressed with it as it seemed crude compared to the feature rich and polished operating system that was Windows 98. There didn’t seem to be much to do within the operating system. I couldn’t even find any sort of control panel.

After clicking around the very dated looking operating system for a while I thought that enough was enough and went back to good old Windows 98, special edition, which at least I understand and could use like a concert violinist can use a Stradivarius.

If you have ever used Linux what was your first distribution? How did you find it? Did you bite the bullet and go whole hog or was it a toe in the water type experience? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
