Amazon echo and google home are smart, voice controlled speakers. They come with a state of the art technology to offer the best sound quality. In 2014, Amazon echo was launched to the market. Many people were impressed by it’s unprecedented abilities. Later, google home was introduced to compete in this emerging market. To understand better how the two stack up against each other, we need to look at the two products in terms of pricing, features and design. Let’s look at Amazon echo vs Google home in detail.
Design and appearance
First, both come in a cylindrical shape. Google home is white in color and features a touch-sensitive top that is fitted with LED lights. It is curvy and comes with a modular base. In addition, the base color can be customized to fit the color of your living room. On the other hand, Amazon echo has a matte black finish. However, there is another option of an all-white finish hence; you can choose the one that fits your décor. Further, Google home is more compact and shorter making it easy to hold with one hand. In addition, echo has a flat top while home had a top that is slanted downwards.
Home is relatively cheap since it comes with a price tag of $129 while echo had a price tag of $179.Google has been able to undercut its major competitor since the $129 also includes platform paid subscription service and 6 months of YouTube Red.
Music streaming options
They both support several paid and free music services. However, the echo does not offer YouTube integration. Google home supports spotify YouTube music, Tuneln and Google play music whereas, Amazon echo supports Amazon prime music, Pandora, spotify, tunnel and iheartRadio.
Many think that home is a more intelligent speaker than echo. This is because of it’s reliance on Google’s search engine. You can get check your calendar, check traffic, track a package or even check a flight status.
Google home is powered by Google’s assistant while Amazon echo relies on Amazon’s voice assistant. Home wakes up when issued with a command `Hey Google’ or `Okay Google’ whereas, echo wake up command is `Alexa’ which can be changed to `Echo’.
Smart home partnerships
Google home has partnered with IFTTT, SmartThings, nest and Phillips Hue whereas, Amazon echo has partnered with Ecobee, IFTTT, Insteon, wink, Phillips Hue and Belkin WeMo.
In a nut shell, Amazon echo vs Google home are almost the same when we consider the basic tasks they can do. Since Amazon echo was introduced to the market 2 years ago, it has proved its capability in terms of performance and third party support. Further, it has better smart home capabilities making it easy to perform different tasks. On the other hand, Google home offers natural conversation with a potential of future updates. However, the competition is far from over since Google home is aggressively pursuing third party support to catch up with echo.
